Research. This is the KEY to buying an established website successfully. Several things to make sure of:
1. That the seller has a legitimate reason for selling.
2. That the site hasn't been massively smashed by Google and is now worth next to nothing.
3. That the the hosting services don't cost more than revenue.
4. That the site is legal. Sure, you may not care but advertising networks most certainly do.
5. That you check and triple-check every metric : traffic, Google, revenue, conversion, advertising, referral stats...
6. Protect yourself. Take the necessary measures to ensure you aren't ripped off. Signing a contract helps. Maybe use an escrow agent.
7. Learn how to run and promote websites. Buying someone else's and operating it will take some know-how.
8. If buying a blog stick to topics that you know really well.

Marketplaces tend to be more moderated, with a clearer structure.
SitePoint Established Websites Is the Big Daddy of this category. They charge advertisers to list which means they have a lot more high quality, non-spam sites for sale.
eBay USA, eBay UK and eBay Australia all have many websites listed for sale. Be careful to avoid the massive amounts of scammers.
Website Broker Sorted by category, a highly active website. Having looked through, there's some real gems.
BuySell Website Low traffic website.
DealASite lots of listings which is surprising given the crapness of the site. Most sites listed are over-valued - but I found one or two good ones.
VotanWeb At time of visit, all websites listed were colossally overpriced.

Digital Point Quite a few sites are listed here, but most of are middling-to-low quality due to the less-moderated nature of Digital Point. Here
